not the cheetah....the antelope

The pronghorn is the rocket of the American West and unique in all the world. It is the fastest animal in North America and the second-fastest land mammal on earth, exceeded only by the African cheetah. And for distances over a quarter-mile, the pronghorn would win over every other animal on earth. These remarkable creatures can reach speeds of 70 mph; one source reports 84 mph.

A cheetah only just outruns a small gazelle, so I would guess one of the species of gazelle would be the second fastest land animal.

In reply to previous answers - I think you will find that peregrine falcons flying at 200mph is a myth from the days when there wasn't equipment good enough to measure their dive. In fact they are not flying when they reach high speed - they are in a free-fall dive, probably max-ing out at about 120 mph.

Also, someone mentioned an ostrich. They are not that fast - probably about 40mph.

I used to keep emu, and I found they couldn't outrun me by much. I could probably reach 20mph (top sprinters reach about 28 mph), so I reckon emu are near 30mph.

A lot of cr@p is talked about animal speeds. You used to read that the fastest moving snake, the black mamba, could outrun a race horse. In fact it has been time at only 7 mph, so a child could outrun one. (Of couse the strike is a lot faster).

The cheetah in the faster land animal and can reach peak speeds of 60-70 miles per hour.

In the ocean, the sail fish can reach speeds similar to the cheetah.

However, the faster animal of all is the peregrine falcon that can fly more than 200 miles per hour.
