i have these shrubs along side of my house, and i hate them. they are the typical shrubs you see everywhere, the ones that grow about 3 ft high, they are used in landscaping alot, but i hate them. what is the best way to get rid of them? i am thinking to cut them down very far, spray with shrub killer, then pull out the roots. they have been around a long time, i bought the house 10 yrs ago, and am sure they are way older than that. thank you

most likely they are a box wood hedge. secondly shrub killer isn't a guarantee that they wont come back... you had on person suggest a classified add. It truely is the best possible way... to get them gone you need to remove the main roots(tap) this requires digging. If you post an ad that state they are free if they dig them out I am sure you will get rid of them... the average 6" boxwood costs 14.99 at a nursery so youll be saving somepeople serious money... fall is the best time to transplant too so you have the perfect opportunity right now. The sure way to get rid of them is to have someone dig them up,,,,roots and all. I had many in front of my house. I hired a landscaper to remove them all. I replaced them with cactus, yuccas and gravel. Stuff that needs very little water. Same thing around the swimming pool. Saves on water and they hard to kill.

If you have no takers on digging them up for you, I have heard that a mixture of table salt and water(heated just to boiling point to be mixed) kills any plant and begins the decay cycle. If you do this now they may be easy to take up by spring time.

Use a chainsaw. It will take less than five minutes.
