Yolanda drove 600 miles from Castleton to Monroe. She returned to Castleton at a 10mi/hr slower average speed. She drove 22 hrs total. What was her average speed in each direction?

Distance = Rate times Time
Trip to Monroe:
600 = R (T) we don't know her rate or time

Trip to Castleton:
600 = (R-10)(22-T) her rate was 10 miles per hour slower, and she had a total trip time of 22 hours, so if she traveled T hours on the first leg of the trip, her return trip would be 22 hours minus T.

Use elimination or substitution to solve the two equations.

60x10=600-----60MILES GO
50x112=600----- 50 MILES RETURN
