Depends on what you mean by running hot. If it is overheating, there can be numerous reasons. A stuck closed thermostat, low coolant, failed water pump, blown head gasket(s) etc. are a few.

Thermostat is one of the most usual causes for it to overheat. The way you check the thermostat is by adding water all the way to the top on the radiator, leaving the radiator cap off (make sure that this is done when the car is cool and it has not been used for a while) turn your car on and let it iddle for a while untill it reaches propper operating temperature, usually to the middle of the gauge, look at the water thru the radiator hole, if the water is moving your thermostat is working if not than that would be the problem. If it is moving you should move to diagnose the fan wich it should be running by this time if not wait a little longer but not too long because you dont want the car to overheat too much, if fan not working there is an easy fix just bridge the fan motor to a + wire preferablly from an accesory that turns on when you turn the ignition on this way is only going to work when you turn the key to the on position. The only down side to this is that the fan is going to be working all the time the car is on, won't mater for most of us. Good Luck!

Engine runs hot, check the water in the radiator first, and check for leaks. If okay, put the a/c on and see if the radiator fan motor works, If it does its either the thermostat, or the radiator. If the engine is idling and it overheats check the see if the heater works, because if it doesn't, then the problem maybe the water pump.

Check the water pump. The fins usually rust out on them.
