According to the basic genetics I learn't at high school they should only have left-handed children. Can anybody prove this right or wrong for me?

*"Handedness runs in families, although even when both parents are left-handed, there is only a 26% chance of their child being left-handed. Thus, it is clear that genetics is not the only cause. Handedness must also be influenced by some of the other theories presented here."

I don't agree with the other influences though. Since its a recessive trait, and because many of the earlier generations were undoubtedly right-handed, the percentage probably works out.

In my family, two grandparents are left-handed, four parents are right-handed, two children in each family, one is right-handed and one is left-handed.

Very few human phenotypes depend on a single gene. I do not think that preference for left-hand dominance follows basic Mendelian genetics, i.e. the trait likely results from the expression of many genes.

The Punnet square will not correctly predict phenotypes resulting from the expression of multiple genes. This may explain why a child's preference for hand dominance does not strictly correspond with familial trends.

If you find out more information, please contact me.

My children will thank you.

Not necessarily. My parents are both left handed and all 3 of their children are right handed.

left handedness, and right handedness, is not a genic trait,
it all depends on your child, and you.
if you want them to be right handed, YOU can help them.
during thier first years, 1-5 is when a child gains the most information from life. wether it be hearing a parent speak, or watching someone write. the child builds up inside and keeps things with them, so just watch what your child is open too.
if you chose to have them right handed, then while thier young just help them, teach them to use the right hand with a spoon, have them hold toys with it etc. and if you want them to be left handed, just do everything vice-versa.

the odds are in the left hands favor, but there is always a chance that the child ends up right handed. take into consideration grandparents and other family members.

I can't tell you statistics, but I can tell you that my husband and I are both right handed, and we have a right handed daughter and a left handed son. His parents and brother are all right handed, my mother and father are right handed and my brother is left handed.

Does this help?

Well, you'd have to know whether or not each of the parent's parents were left handed or ight handed. Then you could use a Punnet square to figure it out.
