I'm considering applying to spend my junior year somewhere in Europe(most likely Germany) Do you think this is a good idea? I know it depends exactly on where I'm going, but I want some input from someone who will stop trying to discourage me from leaving. I live in the U.S. now.

I used to live in Germany, and sounds like a great oppurtunity for you. I would highley consider it. Gives you chance to explore, meet new people, and identify with new customs. Don't worry about the language barrier because English is now required learning for any student in Major European countries. Such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, and Sweden. Not everybody will no English, but where you will be going is more than likely going to be a city. The cities are where you will find a lot of the natives will speak English because of buisness relations. Cities in Germany that speak English Heidelberg, Mainz, Manheim, Munich, Hambourg, Cologne, and Ramstein this only scratches the surface there are many more cities too. You will be fine, and good luck to you!!! Nab it, and if anyone tells you otherwise they are just jealous. Think about when else are you going to find an oppurtunity to live in another country like this? Take it while your young!!!

;-) Why else would you consider that? No, really. One thing is going to some other country to LEARN another language and culture. To understand how other people live, entertain, get education, etc. Then (being Russian living in the US), yes, language barrier is not a problem - after all, that's why you are going there. BUT... I guess you mean you want to get a different kind of education, MOST probably within a facility (school/college/etc.) that is not specifically designed for English speakers, but for local population. Then, yes, language is essential. But either way (with language or not) from my own experience - no matter how well you know the language and how much you read about the culture, first hand experience cannot be compared with anything. And if you can afford it (not only financially, but also time, emotional determination) GO FOR IT!!! It is experience you will remember the rest of your life!!!
