because they are usually middle class retired proffesionals who claim to know their rights ,and insist on walking in places that are inconveniant to farmers /land owners/animals, not because they need to but to be awkward and contrary. also these type of people f**k it up for everyone else.they are generally rude/ignorant /snobby/spoilt individiuls/who have to go out into the sticks to avoid being confronted by people who they have generally got up the nose of over the years.

I found it the other way around. City people were cold and country folk were warm and cheery. I grew up in the city that way and moved to the country at twenty years old. It took some getting used to greeting everyone but I wouldn't change back now no matter where I lived. The more that give a friendly greeting, the more that will in the future. A greeting makes me feel like I belong. Keep up the good work, and cheers mate.

I always say "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon" when I meet people when I'm out walking in the hills and usually they are polite enough to reply.

I'm sure it doesn't apply to you, but the only people I make a point of not speaking to are people with badly behaved dogs, especially if there are sheep or other livestock nearby. A badly behaved dog just shows that the owner is an ignorant oaf, and not worth speaking to.

I try to avoid large parties of ramblers wherever possible - they are usually just mindlessly following the boots of the person in front, unaware of their surroundings unless one loud-mouthed member of the party awakes from his/her semi-unconscious state and announces in a loud voice that there is a view (it wouldn't be the sight of any wildlife - their noise would've scared that off long before it was in sight).

I used to live in a beautiful isolated cottage down a long single track lane. It was on top of a hill and surrounded by woods, a grass track ran along one side of it. I used to love to sit in my garden and watch the deer and birds it was so quiet and tranquil. Then the peace would be shattered by a group of so called ramblers all wearing silly hats and large boots! They could never speak quietly but marched along bellowing at the top of their voices and frightening every living thing for miles around! I don't know what pleasure they got from their walks because they certainly couldn't appreciate the beauty around them they never stopped to look. Then there were the walkers, now these were a different type all together. I got to know many of them often asking them into the garden for a cup of tea and a chat. These tended to be people who loved the country side and the wild life and many of them were accompanied by beautiful dogs. Please don't stop greeting people it is always lovely to have someone smile and say hallo. I don't blame you for what you did, I've been tempted myself! After all you were only showing them your bow fingers were in tact! As per the bow men at the battle of Agincourt!

People are wrapped up in themselves, and often feel that their opinions are the only opinions that are valid. ( an example - I had a visit from the Police recently as I had been observed, by a neighbour, skinny-dipping and sunbathing naked on a deserted beach 2 miles from the nearest house - on further investigation it transpired that he was a mile away, watching birds (feathered variety!) through binoculars, and spied me and my wife in the nude by chance. No charges were pressed).

That is the sort of people we have to deal with, unfortunately. If you passed me in the street and said "good day", I would reply in like manner and probably invite you for a pint. I am with you 100% - we are a miserable bunch of buggers these days.
