Confucius provided a host of valuable concepts for living life in such a way as to bring harmony to ones life. It was intended for this plane of existence, and was of practical application in ones physical life.
Lao Tsu, (zi), was, by contrast, focused on putting forth Spiritual Truths in forms of seeming paradoxes. The couplets of Lao Tsu, were understandable at various levels. They seemed paradoxical to many, and each carried a mystical message that only those who had accessed the Esoteric realms within themselves could perceive.
Lao Tsu, was either a Master, or would soon become one, as his teachings were of a Spiritual path that flowed through the couplets that, as I said, could be interpreted at levels which reflected ones relative level of consciousness.
Confucius gave messages for this physical plane, and Lao Tsu gave messages that were of interest to the intellect, but also contained messages for those capable of "seeing" the Esoteric message vibrationally "carried" by each couplet.
