Drill a hole in them and pour petrol into the hole. Bung the hole with some plastercine or clay. This poisons the roots and the smaller roots will die and they will be easier to pull from the ground.
Another way of poisoning the roots is to hammer in copper nails.
This is also handy if you have a nasty neighbour who refused to trim his trees and they are blocking your light. Hammer a few copper nails into the trunk and the tree will die.
stuff him....Just kill his trees.....But Shhhhhh!!! It's a secret!
Oh an the petrol wont evapourate if you bung the drill holes...
Any "vapours" will be absorbed by the root and the root will die...and trust me..copper nails DO work..They take a bit of time but they DO work!!!

Drill holes, apply sugar, soda, molasses, cornmeal or anything with sugar. Cover with compost and wait a few weeks. The microbes, naturally occurring in the soil will break down the wood in a relatively short time. All this without damaging the environment and /or poisoning animals or people. Some of the previous answers suggest applying substances that will actually serve to preserve the stump! Also, the organic method will improve your soil as nature breaks down the ingredients. Good for you and good for your garden!

Do not use rock salt. It will poison your soil but probably won't do anything to the tree. The best way is to cut it down, as large trees with established root systems can't really be killed with chemicals unless you're going to use a ridiculous amount of them, which is a terrible thing to do to the environment, because it'll sterilize the soil, contaminate groundwater, etc.

Copper works for Birch trees mainly.
Diesel works, drill holes or cut a cross in the top. Fillwith diesel and block with putty.
If the trunk is less than a 450mm diameter I would go to the effort of digging it out.

Drill holes and put in bleach or, even better, caustic soda. Don't forget to protect pets (yours or your neighbours') by covering it or keeping animals in for a day or two.
After several weeks the roots will be dead and the wood starting to rot, so you should be able to dig them out more easily.

Copper is good for killing roots, if you know anybody in engineering get them to get you some copper welding tips, drill some holes into the trunk and fill the holes with the tips, you can buy copper nails, but my idea's better.

There's a preparation called Stump Out. You drill holes in the stump and put the powder in. It's nitrogen and it helps the wood break down. It's not harmfull to plants or soil.

Copper nails dont work that well, petrol is plain daft it evaporates! Drill a couple of holes in stump and use round up weed killer as it kills the roots of plants. Or get urea which is hard to get unless your in forestry. Urea is urine based.
