The average is 14 days, but, as you said, this can vary widely. Some women are like clockwork, others are more variable. If you're trying to get pregnant, here's a tip that I think is more effective than counting days: Pay attention to your discharge and look for it to be like clear, runny egg whites. Sorry to be so graphic, but that is a really great indicator of when you're ovulating. A friend gave me that tip and we literally got pregnant with just one try.

My pregnancy book says if you have a "normal" 28 day cycle you should ovulate in 14 days. That means you will want to make love 24-48 hours before that date. It can take some time for the sperm to swim up to fertilize the egg. Good Luck!

General rule of thumb is the middle of your cycle so ideally if you have a 28 day cycle it is on day 14. This will make you fertile from about day 10-15. Good luck!
