If your trying to decide what to buy, keep this in mind. A classical guitar doesn't have as much support inside the body an the steel strings over time will bend the neck a lot faster than nylon would

Nylon strings have a softer sound and are easier to hold the chords down. They give a sound that is a folk music kind of sound, or a ballad sound. They are used on classical guitars. Steel strings are more durable, give a harder callous on the chord fingers and a harder sound with a bit more 'twang' to them. Steel strings can go with a more up-tempo country-western sound or a soft rock sound on an acoustic guitar.
For electric guitars the steel strings are used.

Nylons (for classical) are usually "fingered" or "plucked" while steel (for popular) is usually "strummed".
