Being stagnate, not growing, moving in life can bog you down and cause you to be stuck in a rut - wasting away. If you are challenging yourself, educating yourself then you should move through life without "moss" pulling you down.

A rolling stone is an extraordinary natural phenomenon.
When a glacier melts back, it deposits rocks ground away by the sides of the glacier, known as a glacial moraine.

Occasionally, because of the running water from the melting glacier, one of the rocks is supported by an local upflow of water, and tumbles, supported by the rocks immediately surounding it. In time, the stone and the cavity it sits in is worn into a perfect sphere, sitting and spinning in part of a spherical cavity, whilst water acts as the lubricant and the driving force to keep it rotating.
Hence the 'rolling stone' and of course it could gather no moss.

Hi Zoolander,

First thought: If I keep moving/at it,
I'll always be ahead, will have no
baggage to carry, rather be free to
continue on.

Simultaneously Second thought: If I keep moving/at it,
I'll never have a chance to sit and smell
the roses and thus gather some dust
and moss around me, you know, that
baggage that comes with sitting around
enjoying things as they come.

Observation: Like most things in life,
most extremes are unworthy - a rolling stone
should stop every now and then to gather some
'moth', take its time, and then continue rolling,

Hope it helps.

The Stones were brilliant, I had every album before their "re-invention". I cannot choose a best one because each defines the moment. From "Little Red Rooster" to "Street fighting Man" to "Her Satanic Majesty's Request" to "Brown Sugar" sheer genius. Mick himself should be congratulated on defining a working class ethos on middle class origins. He saw music for what it is, a way to gain celebrity, money and status, despite having all three to begin with. Yet here he is at 65, still planning the next tour. What we "originals" loved about him was the pure p**s take he took, and he is still taking it lol. Picking a fave Stones record denigrates the influence they took from the Blues and other black genres, and made their "own". Mick, having the intelligence that he does, simply saw a niche in the market and exploited it.. Power to him, but I really have no desire to see a man of his age reap in yet more money needlessly, it smacks of huge ego, and a "Dorian Grey" fixation. Retire Mick, it is not attractive, let us fans revel in what the band was, not what it has become, a nostalgia trip for those who were not there when it happened.

If you keep on moving in life, you will not be bogged down by external and eventually irrelevant things.

I guess the key is that moss is external to the stone, and is not something the stone would like.

You can think of it in terms of moving on in relationships, of keeping learning to stay relevant at work, keep on growing and trying new things to enjoy life...

If you keep moving and dont stay anywhere long enough to form meaningful relationships you will never carry around unnecessary baggage.

If you keep active , always on the go, you will not age as quickly as someone who just sits there and does little.

To me it means that you need to settle down in life, achieve things. Finish things before going on to some thing else etc....

Just to keep on (doing whatever it is you do)..Do not stop... Its like some folks lived to be a ripe old age..worked hard....others...just sit down and die. Action keeps you young.
