A few million years ago, a bunch of vegetation and wildlife dies in a rockslide. The remains are slowly covered by soil. This, over a period of a million years or so, turns into crude oil. A million or 2 years more, with the tectonic plates exerting millions of pounds of pressure, turns this into coal. This, in turn, gets squished into diamonds.
Or, as in the case of Ferris Bueler's Day Off, you can just stick a piece of coal into Cameron's ***, and two weeks later you'll have a diamond.

Diamonds are found in volcanic pipes in two types of rock: lamproite or kimberlite. Diamonds can be found outside of the pipes when erosion has exposed and transported them.

Coal, but a professor I had once said that "coal is made up of petrol which is oil and oil comes from dinosaurs", so you make the jump by selecting one or the other. All the above are correct answers.
