Take a cue from the landscape and focus on plants that are native to your region. Do a search online for the term xeriscape plants and that should lead you in a good direction. The term xeriscape refers to places that receive little water - believe me you do not want to worry about doing the "traditional" garden in the southwest, so don't approach the plant materials with that kind of mind set. Luis Barragan of Mexico was very successful using native Mexican plants in gardens he built, look him up too.

Good luck,
jeff

Penstemon, daylilies, sedum, hollyhocks, Russian sage, yarrow, echinacea, yellow coneflower to name a few. My son lives in Taos and grows lots of plants there. Good luck.

I have had luck with Yucca and hollyhocks, and if you looking for trees try pinon. I have had no problems getting any of this to grow in NM
