In 2006 consumer reports rated HP as having the lowest returns and defects of all the major laptop computer makers. HP is also the second largest computer maker. Either processor will be fine. Intel Centrino is a little more expensive because it is bundled with special wireless hardware that provides for longer battery life. Either way your deciding factor needs to be your budget. Get the best you can. Save on memory now and you can add more later.

The intel Pentium M is the ONLY processor designed from scrach with laptops in mind.
I am using one right now and its an amazing processor for laptops.
Dell is "OK", but I just bought an HP with the Intel core 2 duo for someone just 10 minutes ago.
Dell is getting cheap these days, so I'm gonna give HP a shot.
HP also seemed to have more choices with their laptops, and some great free upgrades

I paid over 1200 dollars four years ago for a Dell inspiron 2600 with just the basics . It has an Intel celeron processor. The same computer can probably be bought here in the US for around 800$ now, I think. I have 256 rams of memory but only a cd-rom drive. This was my first computer but I would require more features if I was to buy a new one now. I have had no major problems with this Dell.

Doesn't really make a difference be it dell or HP, it's just how you handle them. Follow your instinct.
