Trillium grandiflorum, definitely, but spring ephemeral. Plant with ferns or something that leafs out later.
Hellebores- evergreen, good winter/early spring blooms.
Bleeding heart- Dicentra 'Luxuriant' is a nice one
Solomon's Seal (the variegated variety is especially pretty)
Mountain Laurel- for a slightly sunnier spot
Large-leaved rhododendrons- ditto
Species Crocus (under deciduous trees, these put on a nice show before the trees leaf out)
Snowdrops (ditto)
Arum italicum
Pieris japonica- beautiful evergreen shrub, early flowers
Christmas fern (evergreen, elegant)
Tiarella (foamflower)
Heuchera (coralbells)
Astilbe (summer blooming, likes it moist)
Tricyrtis (toad lilies) good fall bloomers, exotic looking

These are some of my favorites!

Many different kinds of ferns, trillium, may apples, sweet violets would be among short woodland plants. Trees would include the dwarf ornamental fruit trees, dogwoods and kousa dogwoods, and redbuds.
