Wasn't one of these guys really incompetent and kind of stupid, like he said he was afriand of some kind of vegetable or something. I vaguely remember something to that nature.

What you're probably remembering is how the Republican attack machine characterized Dukakis, a governor of Massachusetts who ran against Bush Sr. Lee Atwater ran the campaign for Bush Sr. and was Karl Rove's boss. Many of the smear techniques used today were perfected by Atwater. Wikipedia has a good articles on both Atwater and Dukakis, that are both relatively objective, in case you're interested.

Dukasis wasn't a fool he was a Harvard grad like our current president. But like Kerry, he didn't know how to respond to Republican dirty tricks and image makers.

Ronald Reagan under no circumstances ran hostile to Dukakis. He ran hostile to Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale. A straightforward answer to this question is that no individual wanted something to do with Jimmy Carter or any of his friends. They were undesirable leaders and the country wanted to get faraway from that administration. So, Reagan develop into the organic determination. Walter Mondale develop into Carter's vp and no individual wanted something to do with him both.

The correct answer is both, they are actually the designated losers for the Democratic party. When an election is not winnable they trot these jokers out to avoid damage to decent candidates.
