Great, you have a year to prepare.
If I were in your shoes and had a year, I'd ask a couple of the guys who do the lifting and learn some lifts (safely).
I'd also watch the current team and practice their moves, expect them to show up at the try-out.
Treat the try out like an audition -- warm up, be a pro, greet everyone as an equal -- and finish strong! At the end of the try out look like you could go on for another hour!
A quick "thanks!" or "thank you" to the judges is polite without looking like a kiss up.
Like dance, make all the moves extend past your limbs -- like the energy is flowing beyond your fingertips and toes.
And, most of all, have fun.
Luck!

I have been in you boat multiple times and was a cheerleader. Now, is this junior high, high school, or college? Because it varies the most between high school and college. It is great you have dancing experience, that's really important.
Don't expect everything to go perfect, it hardly ever does, and they don't need you to be perfect. Just show all of your skills. Stick your landing. Know the stunts and terms. Arrive at try outs looking neat, clean, and clothing that fits you well and you can move around in. Stretch a LOT more than you normally would. Toe touches, cartwheels, handsprings, all your tricks. Those are most common. Always stretch at least 15 minutes each day. Ask your coach what kind of stunts and flips/tricks they require, then you have a head start.

I would get with another cheerleader on the squad so she could give you some pointers on what they look for and also just practice being loud and your gymnastics skills. Just be your best. I was a cheerleader for 5 years and always talked to the judges and introduced myself before the tryouts and I always was myself. Good Luck!

It helps if you can do gymnastics like back handsprings, but make sure you can do something...like a cartwheel or a round off. Practice your jumps...toe touches. Make sure that your cheers are loud and you movements are stiff and show spirit!
