If you go to a provider's website you should be able to send a text for free. You can go to www.uscellular.com and in the far right corner, it will let you send a text message for free. yahoo also allows you to send text messages from intstant messaging.

I don't use the system but I believe that MSN messenger has a facility to send messages to a registered mobile phone called mobile messaging. The link may help

I'm with Orange, and as such, get 30 free texts a month. Dont know if other networks offer this

Carriers, like T-Mobile, allow you to do this a no cost from their website. The recipient will be charged (depending on their plan) but you won't.
