dell inspirons are very cheap for laptops (the cheapest ones i've seen) and work well. dells work well in general, but most are more expensive than the inspiron, which costs about $499.99. i did see one cheaper one it was about 399.99 i think but it was a really crappy brand, known for its products not working well. hope this helps.

Depending on the course of studied the internet part is a given all have a network card and can be used wirelessly or through the dorm LAN line.
Inexpensive laptops can run $500-800.00, look at reliablity, servicablity and if it can be upgraded. Because as you progress in college your work may become a
bit more compilcated, so expandabilty is important.
Software is also a main point, but Microsoft does have a version of MS Office for Teachers and Students for 1/3 the price of the non-academic version.

If you dont care for much other than the internet and word processing, I would get a laptop that is:
Small
Light
Not too fast (more speed = more power)
Dells are cheap, both with quality and $$.
Ultimately you do get what you pay for!
Btw, whatever you do, DONT get a Pentium 4. However the Pentium M is great (not pentium 4M-thats trash)
