New Zealand or Canada? I have visited New Zealand, and the police officers don't even carry guns there. Why do you think America is more violent than New Zealand?

I belive it has to do with the media, and population size. United States is way larger than New Zealand so statistically we have more chances of people committing violence. Canada is big but maybe it is the beauty of the country.

If only European descended Americans [European-Americans?] were counted the violence rate would be about the same as Northern Europe's. The reason The US rate is so high is that a substantial part of its population comes from cultures that have high rates of interpersonal violence. For instance, African-Americans make up about 12.5% of the population & commit some 44% of violent crimes.

The reason New Zealand's rate is so low is that it killed off most of its indigenous population, repressed the remainder, & sharply restricted immigration to those of European descent.

The European rate has climbed sharply in the past decade or two. London is now about as violent as NYC. The reason is almost entirely due to the explosion of immigration (legal & illegal) from Africa & the Middle East.

Because most Americans believe it's good to bear arms, and because of mind control created by TV and the press. Killing people is considered a bad thing in most countries, but America promotes war.
Police in Britain do not carry guns and guns are illegal.
The British Olympics riflemen have to go to another country to practice. There are no gun shops or gun clubs in the country.

America is violent. It was founded on violence and that is all this land knows. We have weapons that most anyone can gain access to, we have a lot of things on TV showing violence... not saying cause/effect but rather correlational. We are taught that violence solves the problems from a very early age. It is shown to us by the government in every war they engage in and it shows us hey it's ok to kill innocent people to get what we want. Greed .... I think that is what is behind it all.... we are a greedy nation... it's never enough.

Watch Bowling for Columbine...it's all about this.

I think it is progressive mentality. I live in Europe now, but I'm American and I have noticed that Europeans have violence but not like we do and it is mostly because they do not live in fear of violence. In a place of vendettas, and generational hate you'd think that violence would be higher here than in the US. But on the contrary, people understand that this type of violence is limited to the people or families involved and are therefore not worried about acts of random violence.

Actually, Canada has worse crime statistics than the Unioted States... Check the link below for the exact figures. According to that UN survey, the USA is somewhere in the upper middle class.

The downside to our freedom is it allows room for violence. Once a crime is committed our court system is far too lenient on criminals. I remember a time when it was said a criminal loses his right, now days they seem to have more rights than the victims. This needs to be corrected. If the punishment becomes equal to the crime, then the crime rate will fall.

Because the Americans are civilized, cultured, educated, rights conscious and developed.

Because the courts are too lenient, the laws aren't enforced, and the inner cities are havens for crime.
