Hi, I am trying a choose a good laptop to buy. But I am having a problem choosing the right processor. I have seen a couple of names like Athlon 64, Athlon XP, Pentium 4M, Pentium M, Turino, Celeron, Sempron etc.

I don't know much about processors, so I have no idea which one of these are good. I am mostly going to use the laptop for internet access, and some gaming. And mobility is not an issue because I am going to have it plugged in most of the time. I just want a processor which is reliable, fast, and cheap.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Stay away from the 64-bit ones for now. They will be better supported with software in the future.

I prefer the Pentium 4 mobile chips.

Breakdown:

AMD Athlon64: Awesome processor, but not for a laptop
AMD Athlon XP: Too old, dont buy this.
AMD Turino: Good stuff for laptops

Intel Pentium 4M: Mobile version of P4 -DO NOT BUY.
Any version of the Pentium 4 uses insane amounts of power and spews out more heat than you'd believe.
Pentium M: Probably the best of the bunch. This is the only processor designed to be used in laptops.

The Celeron and Sempron are both low performance version. I wouldnt buy them.

The Intel Core 2 Duo is the only one better than the Pentium M.

Hope that helps

I would say count out the Celeron, you will find it slow.
I am a loyal Pentium 4, 4M and M fan so I would say choose these you won't be sorry.

Yet I have seen bench speed test with the Pentiums against the Athlons and they do compare nicely. The choice between these would be up to you.
When you have some extra time go to Best Buy or another electronics store that will have display laptops you can "play" with. There you will be able to see and compare the different types of processors against each other on your own.
At that point its all up to you. Good luck.

Whenit comes to processor always choose intel setup and no other thing.

Pentium-4: Good for Desktops
- Bulky because of the big heat sink and battery required.
- Better for gaming and video editing... but look for P4-Hyperthreading

Pentium-M(a.k.a. Centrino System)
- Smaller and light weight.
- better for people who are very mobile.
- it is a more modern processor

There's a lot to learn about processors, more than I could teach you here. I'll give you one tip, though: Do NOT buy an Acer. My laptop is an Acer and, wow, what an utter piece of crap it is. If you buy an Acer, dont bother locking the battery in because you have to pop it out every time your system locks up and you need to reboot.

Acer = crap
