Kind of depends on what other people are doing. Some buffets aren't very orderly, so you get people going in all different directions. If that's the case, I go ahead and politely make my way in. I don't try to shove or anything. Just try and edge in when I find an opening... If it's an orderly place, I usually wait for other people.

It depends on how fast the line is moving.
If your plate is loaded and ready to go and you are only getting one particular item from a serving dish, it would be polite to break in with a quick smile and excuse me! though it may not win anyone's hearts.
But if you are planning to help yourself to the buffet you may have to wait in line like everyone else. If someone in front of you is taking really long, you just have to wait it out, butting in is rude as everyone would like to take their time with food, and your patience would be expected!

If you wait for someone else to make room for you at a buffet you're going to starve too death. Get in line for the food, and don't let anyone push you around.

Ditto....go with the flow is the best way for a buffet - that way, you are only butting in if you have to

When I eat at such a place, I stand back with my plate, with my eyes on whatever I'm waiting to get to, and wait for someone to notice and make way all on their own before THANKING THEM and getting my food.
Service and patience beats greed and superiority any day.

You walk up a say loudly "Everyone, step AWAY from the buffet"
Then you just walk in to the space that is made, fix your plate and say loudly "thank you, please resume your activities"

If you can get food from either side and all the sheep are lining up on only one side - I help myself from the other side.
