OK - there are three feet in a yard. When you cube something, you go 3 x 3 x 3 = 27. Thus, you have 27 feet in a cubic yard. Basically to cube something is to multiply itself by 3.

3 ft in a yard...so...
3 feet wide...
3 feet high... (9 so far)
3 feet deep ...(9 times 3)
27 cubic feet.
