This obviously depends on your body type and how much fat you have on your gut, but there is no reason you need to go to the gym for good abs. Do aerobic excersize (jogging, jumping jacks, etc) to get the fat off. Then adopt an excersize routine involving several different ab excersizes. There is no reason you need to spend hours doing crunches. 8minute abs (you know the old video) actually works pretty well. Other excersizes to consider: crunches with your pelvis lifted off the ground, leg lifts, flutter kicks and twists. Also, I suggest doing push ups. Push ups help your abs in two ways. First they do help strengthen your abs and core muscles a little. Second they boost your chest muscles to make your stomach look flatter.

To get ripped abs, you need to lose body fat. Diet is extremely important. To slim your body you must:

Burn more calories than you eat.

Cut your fat intake.

Eat three cups of fat free low cal yogurt a day (make sure it has live cultures in it) and pineapples. This helps you break down your food.

Do 45-60 min. of aerobic exercise a day (preferably before you eat in the morning). This will attack the fat.

Do 20 min of weight training three times a week. This will build lean muscle which will in turn burn fat. Hand weights are fine.

I lost 40 lbs in two months and have kept it off for two more months doing this. I also took my body fat % from 30% to 14%

Be Blessed

Big arms: Push-ups/dips, handstand presses, pull-ups/chin-ups, inverted rows. Entire upper body is covered by these exercises, as you progress on them big arms are inevitable. Look these exercises up on youtube if you're not familiar with them. If you don't have anything to do pull-ups/inverted rows with then find something, they're vital for arm development, especially the pull-ups. Ripped abs: Diet, diet, diet, diet, diet diet, diet. Get your body fat percentage to 10%. To gain extra muscle mass there you don't need to do much, 3 sets of an effective abdominal exercise every few days is fine. Decent exercises are: prone bridges, sit-ups, hanging knee-hip raises, reverse crunches. If you want an example program, alternate between these two workouts every other day. Workout A: 3 sets of push-ups or dips until failure. 3 sets of inverted rows until failure. 3 sets of sit-ups until failure. Workout B: 3 sets of handstand presses until failure 3 ses of pull-ups or chin-ups until failure 3 sets of hanging knee-hip raises until failure Keep in mind that although this workout routine covers your entire upper body and abs, your legs and spine will be very neglected leaving you ultimately poorly proportioned which isn't too good for your health.
