It's also preference. ...What works the best for you? What colors some places might have that other places might not carry.. Some brands of make up are also made for younger/older people.
I tend to like Clinique. But I know that they don't have outrageous colors, and work mostly in pinks. Or colors that are more subtle. (No lime green...) They still do have blues and greens, but they're lighter, and not bright. If you're looking for brighter colors, maybe try mac.

Everyone is going to have a different answer because we're all different. I have been using Mary Kay for years, why? Because everytime I think something better is out there and switch I always end up not happy and going back to Mary Kay. So my advise is try out any brands and ask for samples. Most makeup counters charge a small fee (buy a product) for a make over. You can always purchase an eyeshadow or mascara to cover the fee. Mary Kay doesn't charge anything for a make over. But my suggestion if you go with Mary Kay is to have a few friends over for makeovers and get the hostess discounts. :)
I used MAC when I lived in FL and that was great make up, I stopped because I couldn't find it when I moved up North.

I haven't found makeup to die for that's flawless... Ive experimented with a lot Like smash box has great primer and their anti shine compact is a life saver...clinique face wash set awesome...mac eyes good.but their brushes are supper soft.(Mac foundation still little to heavy for me from fix, tech, tried the stick, and liquid to messy for me ,Ill stick with sponge applicators... my next try is full coverage) bare minerals foundation is great cause I can sleep in it not break out....their eye-shadows stand out a lot but messy....oh and Avon's new firming eye gel is fantastic and firming lotion....

I love Bare Minerals by Bare Escentuals. It doesn't clog your pores, you control the coverage and at least for me it covers the issues that I have with my skin, dark circles, broken capillaries. It also has a natural SPF15.

I love everything Lancome makes! If that's too expensive, MAC is good too. The only thing I don't like in MAC is their mascara.

I like Clinique. All their stuff is good not just make up. Cheaper than most of the others too.
