Kudos to you for facing this situation head on and not avoiding it. I may be totally wrong, but I think that's the kindest thing to do for everyone involved.
You may not be able to avoid hurting him, but a good start would be saying exactly what you said here: you really, really don't want to lose his friendship, but you've had really bad luck going out with friends.
He may not react well to that - a lot of guys have a thing about women wanting to be "just friends". But the flip side is that you shouldn't feel manipulated into doing something you're not interested in or you're not ready for.
Best of luck!

Just be honest with him, that's the only thing you can do. It will still hurt him but he'll have to understand. If I were you I would simply state that you've been down the rode of dating friends before and it didn't work. Explain to him that he's an amazing friend and you wouldn't want to lose him as a friend if the relationship didn't work. Let him know you'll always love him but as a friend and nothing more.

You tell him the truth. Tell him the relationship between you and him is just way to strong and beautiful that you can't even think of the fact or want to jeopardize one day breaking that bond. You can still continue to be good friends and just reassure him how much you care for him as a friend.

How lucky to have a best friend of another sex for 17 years!
Tell him just what you told us here. I think it is a valid reason and he will get the message without being hurt.
Good luck!

This is never an easy thing to do because you don't want to break his hurt but you can't lead him on either. Just be upfront and gentle with him. Whatever you do or say he is going to take it the wrong way but if he is your true friend then he will remain your friend.

Tell him you value his friendship so much that you don't want to try to be more than just friends because you don't want to lose him completely.
Then give him a hug.

My advice is to just tell him you are very flattered but right now you can't accept. Don't go into all the explaining, you know we don't have to tell every thought we have to others.
