through trade routes, and some African kings then were converted to Islam, which then led to the establishment of islamic schools and the islamisation of countries now called Mali, Burkina-Faso, Senegal, Mauritania, Sudan and Tchad (for their northern parts) and Niger. Also Northern parts of Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and islands of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania are Islamic. All attributed to either Islamic traders settling in (as in Zanzibar) or trading with African rulers.

There were several routes that Islam disseminated thru Africa over a long period. In the early beginning the first migration of persecuted Muslims out of Mecca (before the Prophet migrated to Medina) was to Abyssinia (ancient Ethiopian Kingdom), back then called Habasha. Later as geography & demography dictated Muslims from Arabia & Africans were trade partners , and it is believed that some of the first African Muslim converts were from the region of Darfur in Sudan who regulatory traded with Arabs who themselves converted recently, and later Muslims conquered Egypt followed by the rest of north Africa.(notice I did not say Arabs , I said Muslims as there were still non-Muslim Arabs in north Africa at those times). Then again thru trade and direct contacts between those north-African converts and the other africans they interacted with , they carried their beliefs further south , and some African royals began converting like in the case of kingdom of Mali (Timbuktu) followed by the masses there. A similar scenario took place with Islam spreading thru Indian south & Asian islands , which were regular ports for Arab sea traders & ships. Locals there began noticing how those foreign Arabs acted , and became curious , and then wanted to become Muslims them selves. Of course from the Arab traders point of view , teaching others the tenants of their beliefs was one of the best deeds they could ever do , and they hoped to be rewarded by God for their good actions. As I stated there were other routes Islam spread thru Africa. For example in the case of Madagascar , some of the tribes there were originally descended from Arab migrants in pre-Islamic period , and their ancestors migrated to find a safe place away from wars that ravaged Arabia during the pre-Islamic times. Now when Muslim sea traders brought them news of this new religion that completely changed Arabia , they had vested interest in learning about the culture of their ancestors , and some became Muslims that way. Especially during the 14th century Arabs from Oman & Yemen moved to Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar & Comoros , which had some Arab colonies back then. The Oman sultan even moved his capital from Arabia to Zanzibar for a certain period of time. Arabs brought trade & farming knowledge to those areas. Later after the various European colonial campaigns arrived at those areas Arabs moved out , and there were unfortunately some massacres against Muslims in Tanzania especially. However some Arabic town names & landmarks remain as a remnant of those who were there. This was the third way Islam spread in Africa. As to your question about "practices", I assume you mean what denomination were the African Muslims. Historically speaking almost all Africans who became Muslim (all North/central/East Africa) were mainly of the Sunni Maliki school. Even the Omani sultanate official theology is Ebadi not Sunni , but they made no effort to make Maliki african Muslims under their rule to become Ebadi Muslims. Curiously the only Maliki Muslim country in Arabia is UAE , which was part of Oman in 14th century. The north African Arabs were already Maliki majority by then. If you are curious what is "Maliki" , it is the first founded school of thought in Sunni Islam , it is based on the jurisprudence, writings & Hadith collections of Imam Malik who lived around 1200 years ago in Medina. There are now 4 schools , and the number was at times more than that , but the 4 are the ones that have large number of followers , the rest are hardly heard of and remain on book pages or in academic circles. The Ebadis & Shias are Muslims but they are not with-in the Sunni classification which is what I mean by the 4 schools.
