To talk to your friends online over instant messenger without installing a local client you should try- www.meebo.com.
It is a multi-client web based IM.
It supports AOL, MSN, YAHOO, and Google Talk.
You will, of course, need to sign up for a free account with one of the above mentioned services, have friends, and have their IM names. GL :-)

AIM has a chat function in which you can chat with everyone you want to, but only the people invited can be in it. I love it.
