The larger the fetus gets, the more it pushes up on your stomach, causing the reflux of stomach acid up into the esophagus. An old wives tale suggests that an expectant mom who has heartburn will have a baby with a full head of hair. Not true....
When I was pregnant for twins, I kept a bottle of Mylanta in my desk. This may sound gross, but I would take a small swig out of it like a flask whenever symptoms would arise. This helped somewhat - but the heartburn didn't completely subside until after I gave birth.
At night, the only way to get some sort of relief in addition to the medicine was to sleep with my head elevated. This drove me nuts, because I am typically a side sleeper. Keep your chin up - this is only temporary - and well worth it in the end.

The only thing that gives me heartburn is cold water, I didint figure this out until I got fed up with the heartburns and decided to monitor what I ate and drank.
Ice cold water was the culprit. I never lay down flat...ask your doctor about that.
PS.You should not be laying down flat after 20 weeks.
Check out your diet and see what is triggering it. I just take tums.
I'm 5 1/2 months too!
congrats!
When is ur due date? mine is jan 19 2007
HAIR?? for heartburn is an old wives tale.... my best friend has bad heartburn for 9 months and her baby came out bald.

Definitely stay away from fried foods. I don't know if this will help you but it did me. Try drinking a carbonated soda, also I drank club soda and it made it stop temporally. When it was really bad I took Alka-seltzer and away it went. I did have to burp. That was the only side effect. Same problem 3 pregnancies.

Congratulations, your baby is gonna have hair! (And no, that's not an old wive's tale, it's a proven medical fact.)
As for the heartburn, have you tried Prilosec? I personally don't get heartburn, but my fiance does. He'll get it by drinking water I swear. He started taking Prilosec OTC and it works wonders. One pill a day, and he can eat whatever he wants without having to worry about heartburn. It's a bit spendy, but if you go to someplace like Costco, you can get it a bit cheaper. Good luck!!

i remember that. there isnt much else you can do. i craved hot wings and then i had the worst heartburn. as the baby grows it squishes your stomach and forces the acid up. you just have to tough it out and try not to eat before bed, that helps. congrats on the babe. oh, use lots of pillows and try to sleep semi upright, that helps too.

Stay away from greasy, deep-fried and spicy foods. Don't eat late at night and then lay down flat to sleep. If you have to have a snack, drink a glass of milk with it to coat your stomach and prop yourself up so acid stays down.
