I do not know where it came from, but it came from someone who was oriented or inclined towards anthropomorphism. The only object missing in the ending of the saying would be the ears of a person to "hear" the sound.
If by sound, we mean vibrational energy, then of course the falling tree makes a sound, and the fact that no one is present to hear that sound is irrelevant.

The person who originally came up with the question in mind was the guy that tripped over the tree while trying to escape from a bear that almost ripped a piece outta him!

Some idiot said it. It's a cheap shot at trying to come off as deeply insightful.
'If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound if there is no one to hear it?'.
Yeah, it makes a noise. If a bomb drops on a remote village, did it blow up if there are no survivors to tell of it? Ask yourself.

The japanese came up with the saying hundreds of years ago. It is a riddle brought on to teach people logic and questioning. Does this answer your question?
