I got pregnant for my second child while on the pill and when i asked the doctor why this happened he said that antibiotics actually weaken the effectiveness of the pill so while you are on medication use a condom just to be sure. And use it for at least a week after you've finished using the meds. I was on meds for my throat as well so , be careful !!

If you read the packet of antibiotics, it will probably state that you should use another form of birthcontrol while you are taking the pill and antibiotics. It is not proven but the doctors seem to think it is the truth that the pill somehow takes away from the effectivness of the pill. So if I was you I would use condoms when having sex until you have finished your antibiotics. Just to be on the safe side.

My sister-in-law just got pregnant with their third child as a result of taking antibiotics while on birth control. I know that they can interfere with the birthcontrol but not sure to what degree. Usually when a doctor puts someone on antibiotics they check to see if you're on birth control and let you know of the possible risk of becoming pregnant. I had to be put on them in March and they asked me if I was on birth control because it could conflict with the pill...well, I wasn't but they still asked. I'm not sure though if any antibiotics affect the birthcontrol or only certain dosages or kinds. Call your doctor and ask and practice safe sex while on the meds.

It's always better safe than sorry - use a back-up form of birth control while taking antibiotics. I am taking antibiotics right now and there is a warning label right on the bottle that says that they reduce the effectiveness of birth control. I also know a few people who have gotten pregnant while on the pill and taking antibiotics - so I wouldn't risk it if I were you...

Ahh...
You might want to let your older cousins know that they didn't get pregnant because they were on antibiotics. They got pregnant because they had sex.
Real simple, huh?
My doctor always told me to use extra protection and to not trust the pill while I was taking antibiotics.
So, use extra protection while on the antibiotics. The whole pill package you are taking right now should be considered basically useless. Use condoms. Continue to take the pill unless you want to get your hormones completely out of whack.
Good Luck

yes you can. Antibiotics make birth control less effective. Use a condom while you are taking them to be on the safe side.
BTW - Your Dr. should have discussed this with you when he/she prescribed the antibiotics. Though, sometimes you need to be proactive and tell your Dr. every medication, vitamin & herbal remedy you are taking to make sure that you won't have an adverse reaction. Rather like an unwanted pregnancy.

I have been told numerous times that any kind of medication, alcohol or drugs will affect the hormones in the Pill. Always make sure you use back up birth control (condom) when taking medications. The medications interactions will lessen the effectiveness of the Pill.

It says in the paperwork (That a lot of women fail to read) that antibiotics can affect the pill. It is recommended to use a back-up form of birth control, like condoms, spermicidal gel, etc.
