what are the symptons when a hardrive goes bad ?

All may not be lost. Are you sure it is the drive? Could be the controller.

Do a Google on "bad hard drive"

Some of this stuff is not for the faint of heart.

Restarting of its own accord. BSOD as someone said occurring randomly. Sometimes just freezing with the screen you had showing for a few minutes before switching off.
