I would definitely want to make sure that someone was there for them even if it wasn't me. I had a friend who made a suicide attempt once and my own ego urged me to be the one to help him, but there were others better suited, with a closer relationship to him. You may the the one, but maybe not. Of course if you are the only one, then you've got to do it. As soon as I could, I'd try to contact some kind of professional psychologist or counselor. I would not, in general, consult a religious authority as they can often (depending upon the religion) increase feelings of guilt or offer inadvisable non-medical treatments.

We're talking about after you slap them silly, right. There's an obsessive quality to your questions. What happened to him was as natural and unanticipated as an avalanche or a tree falling.

I'd consider it a sign of the times. Everyone has their own way of dealing with life & death, as long as they don't hurt anyone else in the process.

I would tell them that everyone eventually dies, and there in no point in one hurting himself/herself.
