I have a spotlight in my kitchen with a halogen bulb int he socket. After about an hour or two, the light literally "clicks" off... and remains off for about 20-30 minutes, when it will suddenly click itself back on again. I believe there is something with the wiring, but is there a mechanism that does this automatically if the bulb gets too hot?

The bulb is getting hot for one of 2 reasons, 1: The bulb wattage is over the spec suggested for the fixture. 2: When the fixture was installed, The insulation in the ceiling was not removed causing it to hold excessive heat.

It is a thermal overload device kicking out, most likely cause the lamp is too high a wattage or as previous answer said insulation is around the fixture. Fixture should be marked with correct lamp size, some are in the bucket with the lamp some are on the outside of the fixture.

You got that right, there's a heat activated over load. and your halogen bulb makes it kick in. The fixture is probably rated for a 60W bulb.

How strange. My friend would say there is a spirit trying to contact you and if you acknowledge it and say thanks for coming etc and tell it it can go now it would stop turning the light off. Or try a new bulb.
