I am thinking of having some counselling but am concerned that raking over the past may not actually help me in the future. Any experiences, good or bad, welcome.

This sounds very obvious and can be dismissed but counselling allows you to hear your own voice. Everyone has problems but there is always one that outweighs the rest and this is the one that isn't always obvious to us. When we are able to hear our own voices and realise what we are saying, then we are able to begin to deal with it. Counselling should have nothing to do with advice. Advice and opinions can be destructive as it is the other persons perceptions that are being passed on.

An experienced and professional councellor should be able to help with any problem - though no one says it will be easy. It may be tough going and you may have to talk about or experience things again you thought were buried, but in the long run if it helps you get on with your life and enjoy life to the full is it not worth raking up a few old emotions? No pain, no gain as they say.

Counselling does not necessarily rake up the past it is often about talking through what is going on at the moment and helping you make sense of it and deal with it

Sometimes, you need to rake up the past to learn from it. Counselling is about talking in a controlled environment and seeing your life from someone else's perspective.

Not all counselling focuses on your past. If you have a specific issue you want to work on, try finding a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT). However, in my experience, looking at one's past in a supportive environment can help to overcome some issues that we find difficult. Look at these websites for some more information:

I went but i found that all the counselor does is listen to your problem, make suggestions, but leaves it up to you to make a decision. I didn't find it helpful for me. I could have saved the money. However, if you find the right one who is really interested in YOU, and not doing it for the money, you might find it would help - according to all the talk show hosts.
