A Merriam-Webster dictionary is the best one to choose for college-level study.

The name "Webster" is in the public domain, which enables many not-so-good dictionaries to use the "Webster" name, but "Merriam-Webster" is the real deal.

The online version at http://www.m-w.com is the same as the text, so you can choose between an online version, or a print version.

The American Heritage dictionary is fine, but Merriam-Webster, particularly the "Collegiate" edition, is better.

American heritage is good, but www.m-w.com is a great, free, online version. It is what everyone uses at my school, and they find it to be excellent.
