It's describing someone who is under intense or extreme pressure. Think, if a person is aiming a gun at you telling you to do something, you're "under control of the gun" and you are stressed. You are forced to do something.

i think it means the same as the brittish saying which is under the thumb,,,,you do not move unless another person tells you its ok ,you do as you are told by a partner and dont seem to think or do for urself what you wanna do.
