it is a device that you connect to your pc (whether you place inside your PC's case, or attach it externally, via a USB port) and can read data from compact disks (like audio cds and data cds, movies , ...) for you.
when you have one, you will have a new device in your my computer (if you use windows operating system, if you use linux then it must be somewhere like /media/cdrecorder). you push the eject button on the drive and it comes out, you will place a CD (compact disk) into it, and then again press the eject button. it will take the CD inside itself and reads its data. you can access this data from the device in your mycomputer. there are also cd writers, that beside reading data from a Cd, can write data on them.
