intelligence is measured in different levels by species. If goldfish thought the same way people do, they would probably get bored and kill themselves.

But yes, they are, mine can tell me from others in the house, and someone has even taught a goldfish to play soccer: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.05/start.html?pg=4 and on Myth Busters they trained to to do a maze. So yes, they are smart, some smarter then others :)

Actually gold fish are really smart. In my science book last year they told that the gold fish has a special sort of nervous system adn they are much wiser than other fish. I though this was funny but htey actually do have to ability to know what their daily life routine and they can recognize things that happen to them often like when u feed them everyday they realise that u hav ethe same face. and they know. its weird...yes...but its wat they say about goldfish and after reading that i seriously think they are smart. lol
=)

they say that fish have an attention span of 3 seconds...
I've been keeping fish for almost a year now and i enjoy them immensely..I seriously never thought I would enjoy fish as a pet.
I sit and watch them and I swear they are fairly intelligent..
i even believe that when one of them died they were mourning because they were not active like normal for a few days.
it seems they know when the light goes on food is coming and when it goes off food is coming.
and even though the experts don't agree with me I do believe that they have some intelligence and even emotion.

no they arn't very smart they only have a 3 second memory span or something like that. they only use instinct like if a rock was to almost fall on them it would know to move out of the way.

My Bala Sharks do that too. I think they recognize changes in the atmosphere like we do. When the clouds roll in it might rain. When fish see people they might get fed!
