I have the Animal made by Dyson. I am impressed. I had a sheltie who shed like crazy, and this vacuum handled it with no problem. Other vacuums I used before would clog and lose suction. This one is great. The drawbacks: Won't go under furniture, is a little heavier than I thought it would be, fills up quickly (I guess that would be considered a good thing?). You do need to clean the brush frequently, especially if you have alot of animal hair to pick up, but it is fairly easy to do.

As a housekeeper, I have used a TON of different types of vacuums.
I have found that the dyson didn't have the different carpet levels and seemed to not pick up lint and strings very good - however it did have great suction with the hose attachment.
The Oreck is my least favorite. The suction is horrible and it doesn't have any hoses or attachments. Nor does it pick up lint or strings very well. I would finally give up and pick them up by hand.
The Kerby is heavy. The attachments are hard to carry around and are never there when you them them. The suction is pretty good with this vacuum, but overall it's more of a pain in the back.
The electrolux (sp?) was overall a good vacuum, however I didn't like how they rolled behind me when I was vacuuming. I was always fighting with the canister, and I also kept running into electrical connection problems in the handle.
And... Any of the new bagless vacuums are not worth the trouble! There will always be dust on your vacuum (which is a sign of leaks). Also, when you dump the dirt, it is VERY messy! The filters have to be cleaned every time (mostly on the cheaper models)... and THAT is messy! I would much rather deal with a clean bag every 6 weeks or so!
One of my second favorites oddly enough is the Rainbow. It doesn't use a bag, but rather water as the filter. The system is great for those with allergies and animal hair everywhere. The suction is GREAT because you are never fighting with dirty filters. The attachments are pretty easy to use, however, I don't like having to empty the dirty water after each use. Plus, these vacuums are not cheap. However the price, I doubt you'll ever have to buy another vacuum again!
My favorite: Kenmore Progressive Canister. All the tools are right there for easy convience. The beater head removes easy for quick corner cleaning. The newer models have a light on the head and also on the tube. Very handy! Having that light is very handy when you need to get into the dark corners. The beater has an auto shut off incase you run over a sock - that way your don't burn a belt. You can also get Hepa-filter bags for those of you who have allergies! The suction is REALLY great! This vacuum cleaner can be used on either carpeting or floor and can accommodate high, medium, low or xtra low carpeting pile. It has a three-way on-off switch, a quick-release pedal. I also love the retractable cord. It has an edge cleaner, suction control, and overload protector on the Power Mate.
These Kenmore vacuums are sold at SEARS. The Newer Models price around $400 +
Here is what it comes with:
Hose assembly
2 wand assemblies (upper & lower)
1 floor brush
1 crevice tool
1 fabric brush
1 dusting brush
1 Power-Mate

Dyson
Dyson
Dyson
All the way.
I Bought a Vax Astrata last year it was great for the first couple of weeks but then the washable filter clogged up it does that every time you use it and you get filthy cleaning it to use again and it takes longer to clean than it does to vacuum your floors. I had bought it as a replacement for my old Dyson that I had had for many Years.
The only faults I would have with the Dyson are that they are heavy (I have arthritis) and the wand & attachments can be awkward to use. I have recently bought the Dyson Animal from Amazon and I am more than pleased with it performance. 98% recommended by me. The best vacuum I have ever had!

hi there, over the years i have had several hoovers, the oreck being one of them, i did not rate it, i bought a dyson about 5 years ago, when it broke last year i tried two others, but i went straight out and bought another dyson, my hoover is constantly being used, so i was quite surprised my first dyson lasted so long.... i recently purchased one of those rechargable 360 degree miracle sweepers, my hubby doesn't rate it but it's good for the stairs, and it's great for picking up hairs. go to argos and buy an hoover try them out on the 16 day money back gaurantee, if your'e not satisfied take it back, good luck getting the right one for you....
i hope this helps

The Dyson really sucks! I mean that in a good way. It will suck up anything. I think they even market a model "designed for pet hair". Could just be a marketing ploy. Again, this thing really sucks and continues to suck long after purchasing it.

I have a dyson. I spent nearly six months looking for a good one myself and you cannot beat the Dyson. having animal hair doesnt even faze it ( i have 3). Always remember you get what you pay for. DYSON all the way.

Sebo Dart used by many professional carpet cleaners, one of the best I have ever used and we have tried most of them. The other good one is the Numatic range (George or Henry) which are good industrial type hoovers.

Don't get a bagless vacuum. When you empty the canister the dust gets over everything.
