I have the same problem, it's to do with the resolution of google's pics.........the 'popular' places, London and so on, are high res, but our bit of England (I'm in east Kent) is not so important to Google Earth, so we're only low res.

Some areas of the world are so far only released to GE in very low resolution, most big cities in UK are quite hi-res. though, (if you can see through the rain and cloud) Compare with Australia where it's all clear and sunny! If you zoom out a bit you will make out rectangular areas which are higher res.

Maybe you are not using the correct screen resolution. You have to use google earth, at least 1024 by 768 pixels..

Because most of UK doesn't have overlays on yet....zoom out of UK and look for patched areas they have the overlays....more are being added so be patient.
Good Luck

There are some parts of the country that are more in focus. Try Bournemouth and Poole.

I don't think everywhere is mapped yet. Most of the cities are on there but if you're looking for somewhere rural it might not be there yet.

The image quality is less-than in some spots and not at all in others. Its pretty much you get what you get.
