I am a social worker with the state of Wyoming. I suggest that if social welfare is what you want to do, then psychology or sociology is the way to go. Make sure to do an internship while in college, or star volunteering now. You do not want to finish with a degree in something you are not going to use. I also suggest waiting on a masters, unless money is no object! Several states will pay for your masters after a year or two of service. Social work can be very rewarding, and also very stressful. At least in Wyoming, there is always a need for workers. Good luck to you!

It is if you want to be a social worker, but I recommend that you do an internship or job shadowing with a local department of social services to make sure that it is what you want to do and whether you can live the lifestyle that you would like with those hours and the salary.
