Well why can't it be limitless? In theory, if the universe did end, you'd get to some kind of space brick wall. Then you'd wonder what was behind that...

It's probably more of the case that it doesn't so much end, but it's a continuous loop - I find that an easier concept to get to grips with.

The universe is a closed system. A universe is created by a sigularity, also known as pure gravity. You can find a sigularity in a black hole. A singularity exploded to create the big bang which created our universe. Now for the chicken and the egg theory on the Universe. The laws of conservation states that matter and energy can't be created or destroyed. That means that matter and or energy (E=mc^2 states that one can become the other) have always been around and that there are probably other universes in space.

Do you mean finite but without limits?

A good analogy is the surface of the Earth. You can travel in any direction without limit, although if you go far enough you will end up where you started. The surface of the Earth has no edge you will fall off of, yet it is finite in size, similar to the universe with one more dimension added.

its not indefinite its infinite we have to think this way because we dont know any person or being who has been that far, as one answer suggests it may be a loop based on time, plus the number 37 bus terminates at clackton.....
