Effacement is the thinning of the cervix to make room for the baby's head during labor. You need to be 100% effaced to have your baby.
Seeing as this is your first pregnancy and you are only 32 weeks, it could be a while... and hopefully it will be. A baby born before 37 weeks is premature.
But at least you are making some progress and are in the home stretch. Did he say you are dialated at all?
Good Luck!

In a first pregnancy, the cervix must be both dilated and effaced in order to give birth. Effaced is the thinning of the cervical tissue. Dilation is the degree of openness.
In subsequent pregnancies, dilation and effacement occur simultaneously. Hope this helps and good luck for a healthy baby!

This means that your cervix is thinning which may cause you to lose your mucus plug which is usually a blood tinged mucus that acted like a plug to your uterus. The more effaced you are the closer you are getting. I never effaced, dilated, the baby never dropped and my water never broke. I wish i had some sign or preparation that the baby was on the way. Instead i had to be induced at 41 weeks.

There is no normal time to stay at different levels of efacement or dilation. Your body is getting ready to have the baby but it could take the remaining 8 weeks to do so. It could go faster too. Sometimes there isn't a change for weeks and it's like time is standing still. Never fear, the baby will come soon enough.

It has been a long time since my last pregency, but I believe it means that the baby's head is correctly positioned in the birth canal or in the right place. When seeing my doctor, I find it a good idea to write down questions I think about prior to my visit and ask them during my visit. Hope this helps you.

If your doctor ever says anything that you don't understand, ASK! They will tell you!
Sometimes they're so used to using medical terms that they forget their patients don't understand them. Fer cryin out loud, don't just nod and say "uh-huh" and leave the office if you don't know what they're talking about.
It's your body and your health (and your money!), so just ask!

It means that your cervix is thinning out. Could be tomorrow, could be next week.
