Generally, the negatives outweight the positives in these situations.
The monkey will be a decent pet until it matures. At that time, monkeys invariably turn into a hazard, too unpredictable to keep as a pet. They can prove quite dangerous as they mature. I'd very much reccomend aquiring another pet that won't be so certain to undergo such an intense change in temperament.
Best of luck.

I am glad you are doing your research first. Monkeys are not nasty animals they are just not fit to be pets, no matter what anyone tells you.
The majority of babies available on the market are black market animals ripped from their mothers way to early. Poorly socialized they develop behavioral problems as they reach adolescence.
But don't take my word for it. Check out this web site I found:
http://www.petmonkey.info/index.html
Look at Articles/Info and Testimonials and watch the PowerPoint presentation. Be warned though, some of the pictures are a bit graphic.
I hope this helps convince you that monkeys really aren't the way to go. There are thousands of other animals in shelters everywhere, why not adopt one of them??
Good luck with your decision.

Monkeys are not suited to the home environment.
They have sexual behaviors that are not pretty and they can't be trained out of.
Same with poo throwing.
Same with food throwing.
Same with screaming. That's not something many folks talk about. Vocalization is a way to claim territory and it's instinctive and unstoppable.
Same with biting. It's a method of communication among monkeys and they can't be trained out of it. I'm not talking about grooming as bonding behavior. They bite and bite hard (enough to draw blood).
It may be difficult to find a Vet, and proper vet care.
It will be difficult to go on vacation or anywhere. Not many people will be able to watch your monkey when you are gone. Both because the monkey will object and because not many people know how to care for one. It can be difficult to travel with monkeys. They carry a lot of the same diseases people do as well as many animal diseases.
What if something happens to you? (God forbid) There is nowhere for the little guy to go if your family can't take him in. Shelters and zoos won't accept pet monkeys, most likely he will be euthanized.
You probably have to work all day. Unless you work at home, leaving a monkey alone all day is like caging a preschooler. They are just as smart as children and need just as much stimulation and activity as one. There is no such thing as day care for monkeys. (too bad, sounds like fun, huh?)
Zoos spend a good amount of money keeping their monkeys happy and amused. Can you make the same commitment?
They are smart enough to figure out cage locks. Zoos also have special equipment to keep them contained, are you prepared to get what you need? Consider volunteering at a Zoo. You will learn so much about the realities of caging wildlife, and get some valuable contacts and resourses
It is so great that you are researching carefully. Please continue to seek out advise of folks who have them. The most important question you can ask is, "What's your least favorite thing about being a monkey parent?". Say, "Tell me some not nice things about this type of monkey" Folks get so excited about talking about their little friends that they gloss over the bad parts.
It would probably be better to have a baby. There are more resourses and it would be so much easier.

It is illegal in most places to own a pet monkey (at least in the USA anyways). Most species of monkey can carry extremely contagious diseases that can easily kill people. Monkey's aren't domesticated, and therefore, in my opinion, shouldn't be owned as pets. You also need to research the species of monkey you intend to get. Research it completely so that you don't cause its death by your ignorance. It is not an excuse for an animal to die because the temperature, humidity, diet, etc are wrong and you didn't know better. Check out the CDC's website links below on some of those nasty and deadly diseases:

You are just attracted to the idea of petting your monkey. If you get a boyfriend, you will want to pet your monkey ALOT less.

Monkeys need to be where they belong. With other monkeys in the jungles. I find it unfair to them to own one as a pet.
