The best anti-virus program is the one that best fits you and your needs. An AV program that requires you to do set up procedures beyond your knowledge base is useless.
I recommend you read this site and it will help you in your decision.

I use Kaspersky anti-virus. Low on comp usage and great.. no problems or viruses/attacks as of yet and I've used it for like 3 years.
Norton is a joke, don't let anyone tell you to use that.

Kapersky is great. additionally, while I am a registered member of the I Hate Aol worldwide association - I do have to admit their new free offering for antivirus is great, it's called active virus shield - and coincidently is built on the Kapersky engine.
AVG is another superb free solution
Here is a link you should check out, it's handy for a number of reasons, but you can specifically find reviews to help you decide on this issue: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm#2

I like Panda Antivirus. But if you're going to use one of the mainstream ones, choose McAfee over Norton, it got much better reviews for 2006.
For a good, free antivirus program I use Avast.
