To erase the file beyond recovery takes a free space eraser program. to that I like can be found at http://www.cyberscrub.com and http://www.webroot.com to get full functionality out of either program you need to buy the full version's but I have found that both do an irreversible job at what they do. Both programs can erase to a security standard beyond the National Security Agency who's standards exceed those set and used by the Department of Defense.
Or you can go to the website of the maker of your hard drive and use their hard drive erase/format tools.
Also another thing to try is inserting the operating system install disk and reformat your hard drive using that if you have the disk of course. Good luck with that.

When you delete a file, the file itself is simply flagged and otherwise left intact. The entry in the disk index is all that is actually deleted. The space that the file occupies becomes part of your free space and may be used for writing other files, but until it is actually overwritten the file is still there and still recoverable. You can get software that will erase or overwrite with garbage all deleted files.

Not all deleted files can be recovered. It takes a very sophisticated program to do this. Unless you are dealing with the feds, you have little to be concerned about.

If you want to completely destroy all data on the hard disk go to http://www.download.com and search for and download a program called Killdisk.
It is FREE. The only issue I have with it is that it is fairly slow. It took me 3 hours for rewrite a 40G hard drive.
If you run Killdisk you will have to reinstall Windows or whatever operating system you use and any other software you want on the computer.
