I am a geologist specializing mostly in GIS now. You can't escape geography. If you go into a GIS specialty, stay until you get your masters degree. That is where you will be your most marketable.

Our office requires experience in GIS before considering you for employment. Environmental consultants, local, state, and federal government, especially the USGS. Marketing consultants, World Health Organization (tracking diseases), etc.

The field is wide and very diverse. It is absolutely imperative you get your Masters Degree if in GIS. Employers will come looking for you.

Geographers can work in many different places. Many end up as teachers or professors. Others get into consulting companies with GIS, cartographic companies, government agencies involved with health, environment, natural resources, fisheries, parks, etc., municipal (urban and rural)planning, geo-statistical research, software development (eg., ESRI), Envirnomental planning. A human geography and GIS combination can lead to jobs like commercial location research for large fast food and retail stores, or epidemiological research or even shoot locations for movie companies. Lots of people need expertise in spatial data and the applications are as broad as your imagination,. Good luck.
