I think my dwarf hamster may have it, and I want her to feel better. PLEASE don't recommend me dri-tail. It doesn't kill the bacteria (FYI).

first things first, if you hamster has wet tail take her to the vet. wet tail, if untreated can kill your hamster. to help hold her over until the vet, which she should be taken to tomorrow, if you can get some pedalyte mix it in with her water to help fight of the dehydration. make sure she is drinking and eating. clean her rear off and dry it. it may not kill the germs, but it will make her fell better and not so nasty.

would you like to have a leaky, crustified posterior? not me. clean out all the bedding and put paper towels on the bottom. with wet tail, the bedding can stick to her bottom and mat up in her hair causing more problems.

there is a type of powder that you can by at your pet store. i can't remember if it's called beneful(yeah i know dog food), it sounds like it, but you can put to small scoops in her water bottle every time you change the water and i think that can help protect against wet-tail.

the most important thing is to take her to the vet. untreated, wet-tail will kill your little hamster. sorry your hamster has to go through it.

Sorry to say, it may already be too late. Wet tail in dwarf hamsters is a quick killer. Normally, within 48 hours. Pedialyte or even Gatorade will help for the moment, but you really need to get her into a vet that is educated about small rodents (which in itself can be tricky).

The best pretreatment is to be proactive in your hammy's feeding. Purchase only a high grade pellet food, which you can them supplement with seeds (or treats from a bag of mash diet - all those seeds and bits) and fresh foods. Too much lettuce, apple, or other watery foods are a huge helping hand to wet tail. Many dwarf hamsters enjoy tiny nibbles of cheese (stick to moderately hard cheeses, like jack or cheddar) and lean meat - or not so lean, I had a baby who loved a little bit of fatty bacon!

the vet has the antibiotics u need. the sooner the better because if u wait too long it will be too late as wettail is often fatal. as u said dri-tail rarely works because it's not strong enough. u can give her some children's plain pedialyte to help with dehydration---with an eyedropper if need be--as dehydration is often the cause of death. make sure u give her no fresh foods for now. since it's not common in dwarfs, i hope it is only diarrhea.
